In To Speak in Pattern, Roxie Fricton explores weaving as a form of non-verbal storytelling—an embodied language passed between women across generations through pattern and thread. Drawing from Appalachian overshot and coverlet traditions, Fricton works with historical weaving drafts to examine the stories embedded in cloth and the ways in which women’s labor and creative authorship have often been erased. These drafts—frequently unsigned and shared anonymously—serve as both artifact and language. Fricton collects, decodes, and reinterprets these patterns, using the loom as a site of connection across time. Each woven piece becomes a record—part continuation, part disruption of pattern—honoring inherited forms while making space for her own voice. For Fricton, weaving is not just a material process but a deeply personal one: a way to process memory, emotion, and presence without relying on words. Every thread is a choice, a feeling, a way of speaking. The cloth holds the truth that cannot be spoken.
Roxie Fricton is an Atlanta-based textile artist whose work explores the intersection of history, identity, and women’s lived experiences. Through handweaving, she connects past and present, reinterpreting traditional woven drafts by combining research and pattern manipulation to uncover hidden narratives and reframe their meanings. Roxie earned her Bachelor of Science in Sociology and Textiles from the University of North Georgia in 2024 and is currently pursuing an MFA in Textiles at the Ernest G. Welch School of Art and Design at Georgia State University.
