Learn to spin your own yarn using both a drop spindle and a spinning wheel in this beginner-friendly, two-day workshop. Spinning allows you to design your yarn from the very beginning—creating unique textures, colors, and structures tailored to your projects while enjoying a process that is both relaxing and rewarding.

You’ll explore fiber types and preparations, learn drafting techniques, and practice spinning on both a spindle and wheel. The class will also cover plying, finishing, and storing your yarn. By the end of the workshop, you’ll have handspun samples and the foundational skills to continue spinning on your own.

While Elke is known to demonstrate her craft in full Renaissance Festival attire, we can’t guarantee she’ll arrive in costume—but we can promise a great class!

Your Instructor, Elke Shubert was born and raised in Germany, where she learned to knit and crochet from her mother, aunt, and grandmother at a very young age. Her passion for fiber arts never wavered, and she later added spinning and weaving to her repertoire. For over 11 years, Elke has been teaching spinning, weaving, and knitting classes, and each year she brings history to life by demonstrating her craft in full medieval costume at the Georgia Renaissance Festival. She shares her home (and her love of fiber arts!) with her husband, three parrots, and two cats.
