This class is designed for the knitter who has found the joys of stranded colorwork knitting, but after working stranded and Fair Isle patterns, still wants more. Is there anything else I can do with this technique? Is there a way to add texture as well as color? What is yarn dominance and how can I avoid it? How do I manage the long floats in the back?
Using a stranded scarf pattern, designed for SEFAA , we will answer these questions. This is not a simple scarf. The central portion includes fairly easy motifs and a steek panel. This section will be started as homework. In class, we will cut open the steek panel, secure a facing to cover the cut steekflap, and begin the end sections by picking up stitches and adding on another steek panel. These end sections will include texture stitches, intarsia combined with strandedwork, and asymmetrical motifs.
So if you are looking for next level stranded knitting, join us Beyond the Pale.
Varian Brandon began knitting at age eight, but a trip to the British Isles later rekindled her love of color and sparked a lasting interest in Fair Isle design and construction. She now designs stranded colorwork patterns for various yarn companies and her own website, with her work featured in publications such as Yarnwise, PLY, and Interweave Knits. Varian is also the author of Waiting, a collection of colorwork hat patterns. Based in Saluda, North Carolina, she has taught stranded colorwork and related techniques for over 19 years at local yarn shops, fiber festivals, and retreats—including the long-running Kanuga Knitting and Quilting Retreat.
