Image: Flora Fastenalia by Evelyn Kennedy is a playful and thought-provoking exploration of found materials and textile craft. Made from cotton fabric, stiff interfacing, metallic thread, poly/cotton thread, metal fasteners, zip ties, and mounted on canvas, the piece combines machine stitching, hand embroidery, and creative manipulation of everyday objects. Evelyn reshaped metal components, polished elements, and carefully attached each detail, transforming ordinary bits into a cohesive composition.
The work grew from her fascination with unusual embellishments, blending her own saved fibers with scavenged materials from her husband’s collection. Flora Fastenalia envisions a future where nature absorbs human castoffs, turning discarded objects into something unexpected and beautiful, inviting viewers to reflect on craft, sustainability, and the resilience of the natural world.
