Learn the art of block printing and repeat pattern design with quilting in mind in this beginner-friendly workshop. Rooted in centuries-old traditions, block printing offers a slow, rewarding process that highlights the artisan’s hand while opening up creative possibilities for surface design on textiles. Please note: while this class focuses on creating printed fabrics suitable for quilting, quilting instruction is not included. And you don’t need to be a quilter to participate! Students will design simple motifs, transfer and carve their blocks, and explore pigment mixing, printing techniques, and pattern registration.
Through guided demonstrations, you’ll move through the full process—from design to carving to printing and heat-setting your fabrics. The workshop concludes with a collaborative “block (printing) party,” where participants can share designs to create one-of-a-kind textiles. You’ll leave with a collection of hand-printed fabrics ready for quilting, embellishment, or future projects.
For over 29 years, Christa Schoenbrodt has led Studio Haus, a multidisciplinary design studio exploring a range of creative processes. Her recent work focuses on surface design, blending hand-printed textiles with digital techniques, including fabrics produced through Spoonflower after receiving a 2021 small business grant. Deeply drawn to the artistry of block printing, Christa designs, carves, and prints her own blocks to create unique handmade pieces, and she enjoys sharing this process with others through workshops.
